| New Album (2009-)
In the June 2009 edition of the Finnish magazine, Soundi, Holopainen said of his plans for the new album "I already feel the album strongly, maybe more strongly than any of our previous albums, even though musically only three songs are ready. I know the final number and style of the songs. Something like 70 percent of the material already has titles and stories throughout. For example my favourite poet Walt Whitman's influence will be strongly heard on the ending track of the album. Whitman managed to put down in words why we are here. His texts are an exaltation for love, equality and joy of life. The next release also has an idea which makes it quite demanding. We're coming up with quite a groundbreaking thing if everything goes according to plan. Training starts in August 2009 and actual work on the album later in the fall. "
Holopainen also stated that Marco Hietala will write at least one song for the new album, and he will probably sing lead for that song. The song will be somewhat heavier than The Islander, but not as much as Master Passion Greed. He said that we should not expect less vocals by Marco on the album, but used in a more melodic way than on Dark Passion Play, and maybe some songs will be more of a duet (like "Dead to the World"). "At this point, Marco have just a few screams on the album, and I don't expect him to have any more".
Hietala has reported that he has been working on material for the new album, but it "has to go through Tuomas' filter first". Even though Holopainen only has three songs finished for the album, he has the others roughly finished.
Holopainen stated in an interview at Graspop Metal Meeting that the new album is unlikely to be released before 2011.
